PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST

    Instruction and Preparation

    Your doctor has requested you to have a pulmonary function test. The purpose of this test is to detect the presence or absence of lung dysfunction suggested by history or physical signs and symptoms. To assess any changes in lung function over time; or following administration of/or change in therapy.

    PLEASE CALL TO RESCHEDULE YOUR TEST IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING APPLIES:

    • You have been sick with cold, flu, COVID, or any other respiratory infections in the last 2 weeks.

    • You have had recent abdominal, thoracic, chest, or eye surgery in the last 8 weeks.

    • You have had chest pain, heart attack, or an unstable heart condition in the last month.

    • You have a current bulging blood vessel (aneurysm) in the chest, abdomen, or brain.

    • You have had a recent pulmonary embolism in the last 8 weeks.

    To Get the Most Accurate Results from Your Breathing Test:

    • REFRAIN from caffeine the day of the test.

    • REFRAIN from smoking the day of the test

    • Do not drink alcohol for at least 4 hours before the test.

    • Do not exercise heavily for at least 30 minutes before the test.

    • Do not wear tight clothing that makes it difficult for you to take a deep breath.

    • Do not eat a large meal within 2 hours before the test.

    • Antihistamines should not be taken 48 hours before the test.

    • If you are on oxygen, you will be asked to be off oxygen during this test.

    • You may take all other medications as prescribed other than breathing medications/inhalers.

    Trelegy, Breztri, Anoro, Tudorza, Stiolto, Bevespi, Breo, Incruse, Spiriva

    36 – 48 hours

    Striverdi, Arcapta

    36 hours

    Dulera, Brovana, Perforomist, Advair, Wixela, Symbicort, Servevent, AirDuo

    24 hours

    Asmanex, Flovent, Arnuity, Pulmicort, QVAR

    12 hours

    Atrovent, Combivent, Duoneb

    12 hours

    Albuterol (ProAir, Ventolin, Proventil), Xopenex

    4 – 6 hours

    Please Note: Due to the in-depth Pulmonary Function Testing process and appointment limitations, all No-Show appointments are subject to a $50.00 charge. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call us to reschedule within 48 hours of your arrival time to avoid this charge.
